Luck: Why It’s the Dirtiest Word in the English Language

LUCK FEATURED IMAGE

Hello, my lovely readers and friends…

Luck. It’s a word most of us, if not all of us, have used at some time or another. I’ve used it many times. In fact, I accidentally used a form of it just today in conversation. But what is “luck.” Is it something tangible or intangible? Does it exist at all? My opinion is that it doesn’t really exist. I know some will criticize and say, “How can you say luck doesn’t exist?!”

I think luck is just a sort of cop out. We never meant for it to be, really. We use it as a sort of treasured word, meaning we cherish it. We cherish the use of the word “luck” because it makes us feel like we can be lucky enough to win at this or that, to get a better job, to have a wonderful family, to have great friends, etc.

The truth is, “luck” isn’t the right word to describe any of that. Winning a game or some sort of lottery or something isn’t even luck. That’s called probability and statistics. All the others have more to do with hard work and the decisions we all have to make in life. I’m a firm believer in the fact that you have to strive to get what you want / need out of life. You have to make big decisions and you have to live with those decisions. Sometimes we make mistakes, but other times, we thrive in our own decisions.

My personal beliefs have gone through a sort of metamorphosis, but I still believe we must take advantage of good opportunities, big and small. Sometimes it’s truly scary. It can be nerve-racking to try new things, go places you’ve never gone, and meet new people. However, it is essential to progress in our own lives. We need to feed off our own experiences and grow from them. We need to meditate on the things we’ve gone through, the things we’ve seen, and the things that have broken us down. Sometimes we may feel like life throws us against the floor and harms us. Sometimes another person’s decision can have a negative impact on us. However, how we respond to it says a lot about us and can have a tremendous impact on our future.

Think about this for a moment. If I want to accomplish the goal of getting a new office desk, for instance, there are some dos and don’ts of accomplishing that goal. For one, I’ll need to have the money to buy the desk. Therefore, I’ll need to save up the money for the desk. Maybe I’ll make the decision to save $50 a week and set that amount aside for the desk fund, so to speak. If the desk costs $200, the wait to attain it would be about a month (or 4 weeks) time. If I need to get the desk faster, I would just try to save more per week. All this is to just paint a picture in your mind. There were logical steps that needed to be taken in order to buy the desk, and therefore accomplish that goal.

Where does luck fit in? It doesn’t. Let’s use another analogy. You want to get a job painting murals on walls of various establishments and restaurants. There are logical steps to reaching that goal as well. Sure, there are other ways of attaining goals sometimes, but there are also some very clear steps you can take, in most cases. For the mural-painting goal, I’d say maybe do some solid research about art, painting, and large-scale work. This will help a ton in this scenario. Once you’ve done your research and honed in on your technical skills of mural-painting (such as practicing on large canvases at home, and asking to do a free mural for a friend or family member), you should then look into the industry of mural-painting and see how to get into the business of doing it full time. Look online and at your library for specific sources that provide detailed steps. If you do it right and you have the passion and technical skill to boot, you should be able to enter the mural-painting business. It’s definitely not easy. Nothing that is worthwhile is easy. It takes hard work and patience.

Did you really read that last statement? It takes hard work and patience. There, I repeated it for you. Nowhere in there did I mention that it required any luck. Luck isn’t going to come to your rescue in any situation. Sure, coincidences can sometimes shape part of any situation as well as circumstances, people’s personalities, and many many other factors. However, luck isn’t any of those things. I think we often mix up the word “luck” and the word “coincidence.” Or even the word “luck” with the concept of probability.

Let’s say you enter the lottery. You buy a ticket. You win. You are not lucky. Luck had nothing to do with it. It happened like this. You bought the ticket. If you hadn’t bought it, you had no chance of winning at all. However, if you buy it, your chances are still very low, but you have some sort of chance. You are now in a group of people who are all trying to win. No one is “luckier” than anyone else. It’s a roll of a dice type of situation. Some will win and some will lose. Someone has to win. It’s part of the game. (There may even be multiple winners.) All it means is, all these names are in this hat, so to speak, and some are pulled from the hat to win (blindly), while others are not. It’s probability and statistics. It’s not luck. The more people who enter a lottery, the lower the chance each has to win (assuming they are drawing the same number of winners each time). In the same vein, the less people who buy a ticket, the more likely each person has to win.

Don’t blame bad luck for your mistakes. Stop making excuses. I know I’ve made my fair share. Life can be scary. It can be tough. All we can do is get up, dust ourselves off, and try harder this time. And don’t tell someone they are “lucky” to have the life they have. Chances are they have gone through similar struggles as you and maybe they have reached some tough to reach goals. Maybe they’ve cried, maybe they’ve gone broke, maybe they’ve lost hope, but bounced back and striven harder. Don’t say someone is lucky just because they have a more “successful” life and have worked their butts off to get there. It makes them feel like you don’t appreciate or even acknowledge their hard work.

Let’s take life by the horns and get where we want to go. It takes patience. It takes dedication. It is really hard to do, but I imagine it will all be worth it once our most treasured goals are reached.

Love you all,

xoxo

+*Mystery, Intrigue, & A New Video!*+

Hello Lovely Stars!

In case you missed it, I uploaded this new video:

I also uploaded an origami crane tutorial video & a baby lips review video. So check them out when you have time, but wait…don’t forget to finish this blog post! XD

I wanted to talk with you all today about mysterious things, or as Coffey Chat’s Shannon Coffey likes to say…”Mister-y.” If you watch her videos, you know how to say that properly. I’ve gone on what I like to call a tangent…

Anyway, so mystery and intrigue…we all love it, want more of it, and try so hard to get it, right? You may be saying, “No, what are you talking about, MaceyLou??? I am completely confused!” Don’t fret about it. You may not even realize you crave mysterious things. I’ll shed some light on the subject first before I get into the meat of the conversation. Answer the following questions:

  1. When you were a tiny little one, did you get curious about a lot of different things? {yes or no}
  2. Have you ever eves-dropped on anyone? {yes or no}
  3. Do you like the idea of having a secret door or compartment in your future dream house? {yes or no}
  4. Have you ever gossiped with anyone, EVER? {yes or no}
  5. Do you enjoy reading mystery novels//thrillers or have you ever enjoyed reading them in the past? {yes or no}

If you answered “yes” to any or all of the above questions, than AH HA! I told you that you secretly desire mysterious things!

Now, on to the meat of the conversation…

Mysterious things draw us in, but they leave us wanting more. Not just mystery novels // thrillers do this. Mostly every good book does this. They pull you in, keeping you wanting to read, just so you can find out what might happen next. There is this curiosity inside each of us {I hope I’m not the only one…} that makes us this way. We want to learn more. We want to be in the know about things. We also don’t want to feel left out.

This is also how T.V. shows real us in. They keep certain details and facts from us until the last minute or the last episode in the series, when they finally spill. They’ve got to keep us on our toes. I may have mentioned this in the past, but I’ve been trying to write a novel. I haven’t worked on it in months. It can be very difficult to keep that “mystery” thread running throughout a story. A story is best if it constantly makes the reader ask questions and want to find out more, keeping him or her reading and reading, until finally they finish the book.

I’m finding it difficult to keep the mysterious ambiance going.

Are any of you writers? Do you have creative blocks like this? Let me know in the comments. Thanks for reading!!

Dollies Clothes Crafts oh my header

Hello Friends,

It’s been far too long since we’ve spoken. I’m sure some of you have left this blog behind, never to think of it again, and that’s fine. It’s my fault for not bringing you fresh content any longer, but that’s about to change.

Me in Kitty bear hat

I’m happy to announce that I will be doing  regular YouTube channel videos as well as regular blog posts right here on “Macey’s Misadventures.” I’ve really missed it, and the only reason I stopped was because there was a lack of time and inability to devote what little I had of it to this blog. In short, I’m back. :)

I'm back

I just want to introduce the new goodies I’ll be serving up, fresh, for you. I will be regularly updating my blog with the details I feel some of you may desire to read about. I’ll also be posting regular videos on YouTube, ranging from dolly videos, to crafting tutorials, to clothing and beauty hauls. All of this is for your entertainment and enjoyment.

Getting Back to Life

Hello,

my readers, if you’re still there…

Where-

I just got over the worst illness of my entire life, and I feel like I should write a little something about it. When you go through a huge life roadblock or a giant life change, it can really open your eyes. I have decided to change, at least as much as possible, for the better.

You know how you get used to your routine and it all seems safe and repetitive? Well, I’d say that sort of happened to me before I got sick. I was used to my routine and I had many stresses to overcome, but I did, day by day, overcome them–for the most part anyway. I get very stressed at work, and I get through it. I always worried about what people thought of me, and I still do. I worry what it will be like once I get back to work Monday after a week of being gone. I wonder how people will act toward me and whether or not it will feel the same. You know what I mean? I guess all I can do is live in the now.

It’s so hard for me to live in the now. I almost never really do it. I think about tomorrow, the next day, the next, and the next, worrying and worrying what will happen next. This is much too depressing. One shouldn’t live that way at all. Each moment should be lived and cherished, but that’s easier said than acted upon, isn’t it? We worry and worry. We try using a planner to “plan ahead”, but the scariest things in life, such as sickness and injury, can’t be planned out in a book. It can’t be foreseen at all.

So, because of all these thoughts that have been swimming in my head since I have been in bed most of the week, with nothing to do but worry, I have some new goals that I feel would be best mapped out on this blog, so I feel all the more determined to accomplish them.

———————

Goal Outline:

  1. Write more on this blog. It doesn’t matter what I write, as long as it’s all me and it’s accompanied with a visual element of some kind.
  2. Be more crafty and document/blog about the crafts I work on. {Pinterest projects could be fantastic!}
  3. Design more.
  4. Illustrate more.
  5. Finish my novel.
  6. Finish my script.
  7. Create a fresh video for my youtube channel at least once per week.
  8. Be more festive when it comes to the holidays and changing of the seasons and enjoy it all more.
  9. Be kind to everyone as much as possible.
  10. Enjoy life more and get lost in the little moments.
  11. Help others, whether it be with tutorials in video format, blog format, or just helping with chores with family members.
  12. Bake more//make more sweet treats, especially French macaroons.
  13. Write new articles for Paper Aquarium Magazine.
  14. Get more involved in our band’s music again. Jam more.

Well, that’s all of my goals for now in general. I hope to put a lot of this in action and show it to you here on my blog. Thanks so much for following me even though I have been away for quite a long time. I hope the holiday season will inspire me to blog more. I think it will because it usually does.

Thursday Thoughts #2: When People Disappoint Us

Hi My Lovely Reader Wonder-Things,

Today is “Thursday Thoughts: When People Disappoint Us.”

Isn’t it funny and sad how often we as humans get disappointed at our fellow man? We move and writhe in the muck of humanity, and yet we judge each other and ridicule one another. At what gain? We see others make decisions we call mistakes, but when we make our own share of them, it’s called something quite different in our minds.

We touch, look, smell, hear, and taste, but do we really feel, see, listen, and take delight in the juxtapositions of life? There are endless streams flowing into streams flowing into more streams of knowledge, and depth, and height. All these things get pushed aside during the 9 to 5. It’s only: “Let me just survive” or “Let me make it out alive.” What we feel then is not really felt, only dreamt. Our lives become empty hallways of doors never opened, locks never picked, and sights never seen.

Oh, to be able to relax and just breathe. To be able to breathe it all in, feel every detail, every second, every moment standing still before our very eyes. All this so we can touch life again, like a toddler taking it all in. We don’t remember those days. We are far too old and blind to remember anything such as that. We are all dying, weeping, sighing, waiting, and fighting. We’re fighting life out of our very being. We don’t want to hold it in our own hands as we should. We want someone to do that for us, to feel for us.

If we continue this, it will only get worse. There’s only a fraction of our time left spent on our own lives, our own wishes, hopes, and dreams. This fraction will turn into a tiny shard of light, then it will be like a microscopic creature, then nonexistent.

I hope we all change this. I hope we all live free again and feel life again. Strive for it. Live for it.

Hearts & Stars,

MaceyLou

Recent Pins Monday #1: Fashion, Beauty, & Fun in the Sun

Hi My Lovely Readers,

Monday is Recent Pin Day and so below I’ve compiled some of my recent and favorite pins all in one image as a sort of mood board or inspiration collage.

I had a very stressful day at work today, but fortunately we have an amazing team at the newspaper I work at, so we all put our talents together and pulled through. Seems like we always do somehow. I feel like this pin compilation is a reflection of the serenity we all strive for in life. Having fun, feeling alive–it’s what we all want out of life, isn’t it?

Even though the below pins are my most recent, they are not brand new. I haven’t been pinning lately, but you better believe this post will inspire me to do just that. The emotions and messages I get out of this image of pins is a message of a fun time full of girlyness and summer breezes. The dress is the focal point of the outfit one would wear in this little “inspiration board world.” The necklace gives a sense of whimsy and playfulness as do the delicious Eiffel Bon Bons candies. I actually ate those when I was in high school during my semesters of French. They are hands down my favorite candy in the entire world (so far, haha) and if it were allowed {and healthy} I would buy a ton of them and eat them for every meal. As for the photo of Lucy Hale, I pinned her to my “people” board, but I feel more like in this context she has the make-up and hair that would go perfectly with the outfit and the summer day itself.

The swansea beach radio is, of course, perfect for the seaside, keeping along with our fun summer theme. The bright and cheerful pink room in the backdrop gives us a sense of contemporary color schemes mixed with traditional textures, and let’s face it, it’s just to die for. The molding and every detail in the ceiling is magnificent by itself, without even taking into account the rest of the room.

Notice I didn’t exactly mention prices. I felt like the dress and necklace were quite expensive. Therefore, they are only meant to be a jumping-off point. I’m sure there is a more practical and affordable version of them both out there somewhere. I can’t see myself paying hundreds of dollars for one dress, but maybe that’s just me. Go find your own versions in your local thrift stores, clearance sales, and yard sales!

Another thing I wanted to talk to you guys and gals about is that I, along with Derek Brown, have an online creative magazine called Paper Aquarium Magazine. It’s a magazine full of contributed art, photography, and other creative tid-bits. You can check it out here.

Thanks so much, my lovelies, for reading, liking, and commenting. I can’t express how much I appreciate the time you all take out of your busy lives to read my blog entries.

Adventurous Friday #1: Cherokee Dam & Beach

Hello Lovely Wonder-things,

Today’s blog post has been published so late, I know. I’m so sorry, but I think you all will enjoy this short and sweet photo/art representation of our little adventure.

We went to the Lake by Cherokee Dam. It is not too far from Jefferson City, TN. Just a little drive.

1} A Fisherman’s shop that was on the way there…

2} The signs pointing us to the beach & lake…

3} We’re here!!

4} Me playing around on the swing set in the park area where all the trees are.

5} Well, we got super hungry walking and acting silly and playing around…so we got Hibachi Chicken!!

We also took lots and lots of photos of squirrels, so I cut a jumping squirrel out of a photo and made a pattern of him. I put a color behind the pattern to soften it. I think it would make a lovely tote bag pattern! <3

BEFORE EDITING (only cropped):

AFTER EDITING {Made into a little pattern}:

Any thoughts on my pattern I created? He sort of looks like a little fox, doesn’t he? :)

Hearts & Stars,
